Leonard Floyd
The perfect piece for the Lions to add to an already versatile defense is a player just as versatile. Leonard Floyd was the type of player last season that the Chicago Bears could move around. He has shown the ability to drop back into coverage, but also the ability to rush the passer. He would fit perfectly into Matt Patricia’s hybrid defensive front seven.
While the Lions base defense is a 4-3, they do occasionally drop into a 3-4. When they are at the 3-4, Leonard would mostly serve as an edge rusher. He can set the edge, provide excellent pressure, and is a very reliable run defender on the outside.
However, when the Lions move back into the 4-3, Floyd can move around and play strongside linebacker. Leonard can cover tight ends, running backs, and blitz from the linebacker position when his number is called.
While Leonard Floyd isn’t the superstar name, he has a lot of room for growth. The Lions’ defense has a few places where they need help and his versatility would be a good match. He could help take this defense to the next level by filling in wherever he is needed.
Seeing the team that let you walk twice a year would be very good motivation. The Lions should keep an eye on Leonard Floyd this year and monitor how he does in Los Angeles.
