Pittsburgh Steelers
It remains unclear how much longer Ben Roethlisberger will continue to be the starting quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Regardless, there is a clear need for the team to have a capable backup quarterback that can step in for Roethlisberger if he were to suffer an injury.
It became abundantly clear last season that Mason Rudolph and Devlin Hodges are not legitimate answers at the quarterback spot. There is much higher potential by bringing in Winston and trying to work through his turnover issues in practice while Roethlisberger is still around.
The Steelers are not going to be in a position to select an elite quarterback prospect, so they shouldn’t feel compelled to force a selection at that spot. Having an option like Winston that still has more potential as a starting quarterback would be a safer route for Pittsburgh.
There is real value in having a proven commodity like Winston as opposed to trying to select a development quarterback prospect. The blueprint for Winston to improve is clear and all it would take for the experiment to take place is a roster spot, unless the asking price is too high for a contract.
