Los Angeles Chargers
After moving on from Philip Rivers, the Los Angeles Chargers have an impressive defense along with receiving threats. They would benefit from at least giving Cam Newton a chance to compete with Tyrod Taylor and a rookie quarterback if they select one in the upcoming NFL Draft.
It would be a different situation if the Chargers were in a position to select Joe Burrow, but they’re not. There is a chance that Justin Herbert goes to the Miami Dolphins at No. 5, leaving Tua Tagovailoa and Jordan Love as the top options for Los Angeles. Neither of whom should be playing in 2020.
Another factor to take into consideration is that Herbert isn’t necessarily ready to step in from day one and take the NFL by storm either. He has a variety of key areas to improve in his skill-set prior to being able to make a consistently strong impact for a team.
With all of that taken into consideration, let’s not forget that Taylor is an underwhelming quarterback option, too. He plays it safe way too much to his own detriment, making himself a low-risk, moderate-at-best-upside type of option. Newton would provide immediate dynamic impact if healthy.
