3 teams who should take a risk on Cam Newton

Reinhold Matay-USA TODAY Sports

Jacksonville Jaguars

The plan for the Jacksonville Jaguars is that Gardner Minshew will start at quarterback in 2020. In addition, they likely won’t end up drafting a prospect at this position with the No. 9 selection and could even opt to trade down from it to add more draft capital.

Even if the Jaguars were to select a quarterback in a later round of the upcoming NFL Draft, it would still make plenty of sign to sign Newton. There aren’t many options in this class that will be ready to immediately step in and contribute, meaning the competition would be weak for Minshew.

Signing Cam Newton to perhaps a one-year deal would enable him to out-compete Minshew for the starting job without risking a long-term commitment. There’s still justifiable concern regarding Newton’s durability so this is the type of arrangement that would enable him to dispel that notion.

This is a team that wouldn’t be the best choice from Newton’s perspective, but the Jaguars absolutely should want to pursue him. A team serious about winning can’t enter a season with just Minshew as their only realistic option to compete for a starting job.
