4 major X-Factors to watch from the Cowboys vs. Rams matchup in Week 1

Jared Goff

With the salary cap landscape the Rams now face, they simply need Jared Goff to take the next step. He was a No. 1 pick at one point for a reason, and Los Angeles must do what they can for him to reach that kind of potential.

Moving the ball up the field has not been an issue for Goff. He managed to rack up 4,688 passing yards with Todd Gurley having an MVP caliber season in 2018, then followed it up by almost matching it in 2019 with 4,638 yards. A decline in passing touchdowns from 32 in 2018 to just 22 last season was tough to overcome.

The Rams’ offense as a whole suffered from Goff’s declining results. Los Angeles put up 527 points in 2018 and that trailed only the Kansas City Chiefs, but scored just 394 points (11th) last season. A dramatic decline of that level simply can’t happen.

It’s not going to be easy for the Rams to earn a playoff spot, or any team in the loaded NFC West, for that matter. For Los Angeles to emerge as one of the teams to get it done, Goff must lead the way, particularly against high-scoring teams like the Cowboys.
