San Francisco 49ers: 5 Players to Watch in Week 2 vs. DET

Brad Rempel-USA TODAY Sports

DeForest Buckner

The Defensive Player of the Year campaign for Buckner is underway. He is currently third in the league in sacks with 2.5, and only trails Steelers pass rusher TJ Watt and Broncos edge rusher Von Miller. And for a defensive tackle to do that is almost a guarantee to earn the prestigious award.

The 49ers are going to need him as they face the Lions passing game. Stafford wasn’t sacked during the Monday Night game against the Jets. But he was under constant duress and being harassed all night.

It’s going to be crucial for the 49ers to get after Stafford as he’s shown poor decision making when under pressure. Per PFF, he ranked 16th in the league in passing against the blitz and 25th in turnover-worthy throw percentage.

If Buckner can lead the way in disrupting opposing game plan, then the 49ers defense will be looking at a successful afternoon.
