Isaiah Simmons Will Shine on Defense
Isaiah Simmons is an incredibly dynamic defensive player. While playing on Clemson, Simmons played practically everywhere. Simmons can line up at safety, at linebacker, as a slot corner, or even as an edge rusher. He is a truly great chess piece for the Cardinals.
While Simmons may not have the knowledge of a true seasoned veteran, his athletic ability will shine immediately through his versatility. He played at least 100 snaps at inside linebacker (299), slot corner (262), free safety (132), edge defender (116), and strong safety (100) with Clemson in 2019, per PFF.
The Cardinals have the luxury of moving Simmons around wherever they see fit. He is the perfect modern NFL linebacker. With incredible coverage skills, Simmons could possibly contain All-Pro tight end George Kittle. However, coverage won’t be the only area in which Simmons shines. He could also generate pressure on the quarterback and stuff the run.
The Cardinals’ defense has a few holes and last season, they had a major issue with being exploited by opposing tight ends. However, Simmons’ athletic ability could cover some of those areas of weakness and that will be vital against this 49ers team.
