Winston Will Be A Free Agent In 2021

One of the benefits of signing a one-year deal from Jameis Winston’s perspective is that he can re-evaluated his situation after the 2020 season. He won’t have to commit to a situation where he could potentially be asked to remain the Saints’ backup quarterback after Drew Brees retires.

Not only will Winston have flexibility in 2021, he will actually be able to capitalize on it. He will likely have a strong indication from the Saints regarding their intended plans at the quarterback spot before the start of free agency. Basically, he won’t have to be left out to dry like he was with the Buccaneers this offseason.

The Saints will also be able to determine if they want to keep Winston long-term after having a full season to monitor his daily habits. If they feel he could thrive in their system, it would make perfect sense for them to sign him to another contract as their starter in the post-Brees era.

There could be a situation where a team decides to move on from their current option at quarterback or another older player decides to retire. Winston has set himself up to be able to capitalize on any opportunity that opens up next offseason.
