Budda Baker, Safety
Budda Baker was my third-ranked safety in an excellent defensive back class in 2017. Right behind Malik Hooker and Jamal Adams, Baker flew below big media expectations and surpassed them during his rookie campaign. Garnering All-Pro honors, albeit as a special teamer, Baker impressed in year one. He did not start much until the winter, but he only confirmed what was seen from his college film.
Baker can play either safety position or even hold his own at inside corner, so like Reddick, his versatility is a big reason for his success. Baker has an adequate athletic profile, good coverage skills, and an innate ability to pursue the running back. This makes him available over the top or in the box, something the Arizona Cardinals are exceedingly excited about. To put it simply, the Cardinals got a steal in the second round of the 2017 draft. He’ll look to prove those who passed on him wrong in year two.
Now in a starting role, Budda Baker is in a primed position to go off. Patrick Peterson and Budda Baker can become an elite safety/corner combo that many teams will envy. He may not live up to the Honeybadger’s persona, but the former Huskie will be sure to make his impact felt this season. It is not out of the question for him to gain All-Pro honors at a position other than special teams this year.
