Things have not gone according to plan for Russell Wilson with the Denver Broncos. That has led to some believing that he could be traded. Could the Atlanta Falcons be a sleeper trade suitor for Wilson?
When the Broncos acquired Wilson in a blockbuster trade with the Seattle Seahawks back in March 2022, it was supposed to be a move that would take the franchise to the next level.
It has done anything but the sort.
Denver has gone just 5-15 with Wilson under center and has started off 0-3 this season. Most recently, the Broncos suffered a humiliating 70-20 loss to the Miami Dolphins in what could be aptly described as a rock bottom moment for the team since acquiring Wilson.
Could Wilson ultimately force his way out of the Mile High City?
Some have questioned if Wilson could end up asking for a trade, and with the Oct. 31 NFL trade deadline looming and the Broncos struggling, the speculation has gotten a bit louder.
Should that scenario occur, Lou Scataglia of Predominantly Orange feels the Falcons could get involved.
The Falcons could send the Broncos a package that includes a 2024 second-round draft pick and a fourth-rounder in exchange for Wilson, who would immediately supplant Desmond Ridder as Atlanta’s starting quarterback. Meanwhile, Denver would get out from under Wilson’s massive contract and would recoup some draft assets in a total reset.
The Broncos could also ask for Ridder in return from the Falcons, providing them with a young signal-caller to replace Wilson, but whether or not Atlanta would actually pull the trigger on that is debatable.
After slumping through the worst season of his career last year, Russell Wilson has actually been solid thus far in 2023 even if his team hasn’t been. Through three games, the 34-year-old has thrown six touchdowns and two interceptions while posting a passer rating of 99.5.
