As Kevin Patra of NFL.com pointed out, the Cowboys have only used the franchise tag on six players since 1993 and have used it eight times overall. The most recent examples of Dallas reaching a long-term agreement in this particular situation involved DeMarcus Lawrence, Dez Bryant, and Ken Hamlin.

Of course, it remains to be seen whether this extra time will end up actually resulting in an agreement being reached before that deadline passes. At the very least, both sides will have a few more weeks to continue discussions and perhaps get further along in their efforts.
