Dallas Cowboys Could Make Major Trade To Replace Dak Prescott

The Dallas Cowboys will almost certainly enter the 2024 campaign with Dak Prescott under center, but that won’t stop fans and media pundits from speculating about Prescott’s future.

K.D. Drummond of Cowboys Wire, for example, poses an interesting scenario in which the Cowboys can take a quarterback in the first round of the NFL Draft in order to eventually replace Prescott.

Drummond suggests that Dallas could trade the 24th overall pick to the Kansas City Chiefs for the 31st overall selection, a third-rounder and a fifth-rounder. He then says that the Cowboys could take University of Washington signal-caller Michael Penix Jr. at No. 31.

Prescott is entering the final year of his deal, so in this hypothetical situation, Dallas would allow Prescott to walk at the end of next season and then hand the keys over to Penix.

Penix enjoyed a spectacular year at Washington this past season, throwing for 4,903 yards, 36 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while completing 65.4 percent of his passes. He led the Huskies all the way to the National Championship Game, where they ultimately fell to the University of Michigan.

But just how likely is plot?

Not very.

It seems hard to imagine the Cowboys using a first-round pick on a quarterback when they are clearly trying to win a Super Bowl right now.

Regardless of whether or not Dallas extends Prescott beyond 2024, it will still be trying to contend next season. Even if the Cowboys already know in the back of their minds that they are going to let Prescott walk next spring, they will almost certainly want to improve other parts of the roster for another run.

Plus, as shaky as Dak Prescott has been in the playoffs, he just led the NFL with 36 touchdown passes. It’s not going to be easy to just replace him.

Dallas went 12-5 this season and captured the NFC East division title, but it fell to the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs.
