The Dallas Cowboys have Dak Prescott under center, so you wouldn’t think quarterback would be an area of need for them heading into the NFL Draft.
However, the Cowboys have reached a stalemate with Prescott in contract negotiations, and with Prescott getting set to enter the final year of his deal, Dallas may need to begin making preparations in the event that Prescott departs via free agency next offseason.
Bleacher Report’s Maurice Moton has put together a list of potential replacements for Prescott in that hypothetical scenario, and among them is Oregon’s Bo Nix.
Nix is widely viewed as a top-five quarterback prospect in this year’s draft class, with most ranking him fifth behind Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye and J.J. McCarthy.
While Nix unquestionably has first-round talent, there seems to be a chance he slips into the second round due to the plethora of quarterback options available early on.
If that’s the case, the Cowboys may be able to make something happen.
Dallas owns the 56th pick in the second round of the draft, which is toward the bottom of the round. It’s hard to imagine Nix lasting that long, especially considering that some feel he could go in the teens in the first round. However, the Cowboys may be able to put together a trade to move up for him.
Jerry Jones’ club also owns the 87th overall selection in the third round, so perhaps it can package its second-round pick and its third-rounder (or perhaps a future pick) in order to trade up for Nix.
Nix is coming off of a fantastic 2023 campaign in which he threw for 4,508 yards, 45 touchdowns and three interceptions while completing 77.4 percent of his passes. He also rushed for 234 yards and six scores.
Perhaps Nix is being a bit underrated in most circles.
