Cutting down on Penalties
The Broncos are one of the league’s most penalized teams, as they are averaging seven penalties per contest. In last week’s 30-23 loss to the Chiefs, Denver committed 10 penalties totaling 83 yards.
The Broncos cannot afford to shoot themselves in the foot against Houston. They must limit the amount of penalties they commit, particularly on the offensive side of the ball.
Denver actually leads the NFL with 249 yards negated by offensive penalties. Against Kansas City, the Broncos had 71 yards wiped out by penalties. Following the game, Denver head coach Vance Joseph discussed his team’s issues with penalties:
“It killed us. We had three penalties that took away 20 plus yard plays offensively. When you are playing a good football team like this that can score points in bunches and you can’t at least have a chance to match the points because of penalties, it is almost impossible to beat this team. … When you are playing a good football team, it is tough to beat them without having those penalties. With the penalties, it is almost impossible, so we will go back and see the penalties and see how it shakes. We will move on from it. It is over. We cannot fix it now.”
Joseph is absolutely right. If the Broncos don’t limit penalties, they have almost no chance against a Texans team that is on the up and up.
