The Miami Dolphins have Super Bowl aspirations heading into the 2023 season. They focused on upgrading the defense this offseason, hoping that the additions they made will be enough to help get the team over the hump and match the explosive offense they have.
One of the splashes they made was acquiring cornerback Jalen Ramsey from the Los Angeles Rams. Ramsey is a star in the secondary and Miami has high hopes believing that he will help elevate their unit to the necessary levels to contend.
However, the Dolphins and Ramsey are holding their collective breath about his availability heading into the season. The six-time Pro Bowler suffered an apparent knee injury during practice on Thursday that the team is figuring out the severity of.
Per NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe, via Coral Smith of NFL.com, the injury occurred near the end of the practice session when Ramsey broke up a pass intended for Tyreek Hill. The two seemed to get tangled up and Ramsey grabbed his knee after the play.
While he attempted to stay on the field, he eventually exited to be looked at by the team’s training staff. Ramsey was eventually carted off. No official word has been given on Ramsey’s left knee, but cornerback Kader Kohou said “he’s going to be good” in reference to his fellow cornerback.
Safety Jevon Holland spoke to Ramsey on the sideline but did not want to speculate on any potential injury. Ramsey is coming off one of the best seasons of his career, stats-wise, as he earned his third All-Pro nomination in addition to the sixth Pro Bowl.
Should Ramsey be forced to miss time, the Dolphins can at least lean on another All-Pro cornerback in Xavien Howard in the secondary. Kehou and rookie Sam Smith fill out the depth chart behind Ramsey and Howard.
Injuries, unfortunately, are nothing new to the Dolphins. They are one of the things that derailed the team last season, namely their quarterbacks. Starter Tua Tagovailoa suffered two documented head injuries last season and his backup Teddy Bridgewater couldn’t stay healthy either, which led to seventh-round rookie Skylar Thompson taking over as the starter.
