In less than a week, the NFL Draft will kick off, heralding what could be one of the most talent-rich drafts in recent memory.
Drawing comparisons to the legendary 1983 draft class, which produced icons like John Elway, Dan Marino, and Jim Kelly, this year’s draft boasts at least three highly touted quarterback prospects.
Among the buzz-worthy names is JJ McCarthy, who has steadily climbed draft boards and mock drafts in the past month.
Former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky likened McCarthy to Kirk Cousins and pushed back against critics questioning his physical abilities.
While McCarthy has faced scrutiny for not possessing elite athleticism, some argue that his statistics at the University of Michigan don’t fully capture his potential as a top QB prospect.
Despite throwing for 2,991 yards and 20 touchdowns in the previous season, McCarthy guided the Wolverines to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game, where they triumphed over the University of Washington led by Michael Penix Jr.
Under the coaching of Jim Harbaugh, Michigan favored a run-heavy offensive approach, which could have limited McCarthy’s passing opportunities and impacted his stats.
However, McCarthy’s impressive 72.3 percent completion rate in 2023 underscores his passing proficiency.
Interestingly, the Minnesota Vikings are reportedly keenly interested in McCarthy, especially after losing Cousins in free agency.
With standout playmakers like wide receivers Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, along with tight end T.J. Hockenson, the Vikings boast an impressive offensive arsenal. Adding a capable quarterback like McCarthy to the mix could bolster their playoff prospects next season.
Currently holding the No. 11 pick, there are murmurs that the Vikings may explore trading up to secure JJ McCarthy’s services.
