The Philadelphia Eagles look like they are going to be retaining head coach Nick Sirianni. But, the staff around him is going to look vastly different. After moving on from their head guys on defense, Sean Desai and Matt Patricia, the offensive coaching staff is now experiencing the same fate.

The Eagles will opt to move on from offensive coordinator Brian Johnson, continuing the overhaul of Sirianni’s staff. Johnson was with the team for one season, and while no official statement has been made, rumors are swirling that is the direction the team will go in.

Following the Eagles’ 32-9 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during Super Wild Card Weekend, reports surfaced that Johnson and quarterback Jalen Hurts were not seeing eye-to-eye. Hurts would routinely change the play calls at the line of scrimmage, which if true, is a major detriment because their offense fell apart down the stretch.

After being in the MVP race during the 2022 season, Hurts saw his production fall off across the board in 2023. He threw a career-high 15 interceptions and the passing attack slipped to the middle of the pack. Their rushing offense also slipped, as the entire operation wasn’t as effective in 2023 as the previous season.

NFL NEWS & RUMORS: Brain Johnson, Nick Sirianni, Philadelphia Eagles Updates

It was certainly an odd report as Johnson was previously the quarterbacks coach in Philadelphia. Retaining and promoting him was supposed to keep some continuity among the staff, but it did not translate on the field.

It will be interesting to see what direction the Eagles go in to fill out the staff under Sirianni. Retaining him but changing all of his top assistants is certainly a risky move, as this could put them in a position to overhaul things again in 2025.

Last offseason, Johnson and Desai were moved into coordinator roles after the team’s success led to the staff being poached. Offensive coordinator Shane Steichen joined the Indianapolis Colts as head coach while defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon took over the job with the Arizona Cardinals.
