The Indianapolis Colts are 4-5 and lost their starting quarterback Anthony Richardson for the season recently. But they seem to be competitive, and it looks like they have no intention of tanking.
Replacement quarterback Gardner Minshew II has been doing better of late, wide receivers Michael Pitman Jr. and Josh Downs are putting up good numbers and star running back Jonathan Taylor may be getting his groove back after his contract holdout.
But the Colts have some issues defensively, and if they want to have any chance of making a run at a wild-card playoff spot in the AFC, they could use a boost there, especially in their secondary.
Bleacher Report feels they should poach Sidney Jones IV from the roster of the Cincinnati Bengals
NFL News & Rumors: Sidney Jones IV, Cincinnati Bengals, Indianapolis Colts Updates
“The Colts are in desperate need of cornerback help, and that was before rookie JuJu Brents was ruled out for Sunday’s game because of a quad injury. This is a team that needs both short- and long-term help at the position, so targeting someone like 27-year-old Sidney Jones IV would make sense. The 6’0″, 180-pound corner is on the Bengals’ practice squad, which means the Colts would have to steal him by signing him to the active roster.”
Jones was a second-round draft pick in 2017 by the Philadelphia Eagles. Unfortunately, he suffered an Achilles injury during pro day prior to the draft, and he appeared in only one regular season game as a rookie. He was inactive throughout the playoffs as the Eagles went on to defeat Tom Brady and the New England Patriots to win the Super Bowl championship.
He has played for a total of four NFL teams since coming into the league, and in 57 games, he has a total of 30 passes defended, four interceptions and 154 tackles (115 solo).
Jones, who is now 27 years of age, could be a low-cost flyer option for the Colts, who are clearly building for the future. If they were to bring him in and he didn’t pan out, there would be little, if any, risk involved.
The team currently ranks 26th in total yards allowed and 28th in points given up. It has allowed over 30 points four times and over 300 passing yards three times so far this season.
