The Apple Doesn’t Fall Far from the Tree
As revealed in his interview with GQ, Ramsey’s father is every bit as confident (perhaps cocky is a better word?) as he is.
Ramsey’s girlfriend Bre, a college track star, is the younger sister of Detroit Lions wide receiver Golden Tate. And according to her, her family could beat Ramsey’s in a game of flag football.
When Ramsey relayed this information to his dad, Lamont, this was his response:
“I’ll make her dad throw all them ribs up he been sitting around eating.”
Sounds like something Ramsey might tell Tate (or any other receiver, for that matter) while covering him during a game, doesn’t it?
Probably because he is his father’s son. Just check out this other tidbit from the GQ interview:
“The funniest stuff is when my dad hits my agent up or somebody, and he’ll be like, ‘Yo, why did Jalen do this?’ And they’ll just be thinking in the back of their head: Because he’s you. What are you talking about? He is you. That’s why he did it.”
So, there you have it. The reason Ramsey is so verbose, the reason he says what he means and means what he says, is because that’s the way his father is. In his own words, he and his father have “never really seeked approval of anybody.”
Most athletes likely wouldn’t be such an open book, but most athletes aren’t Jalen Ramsey. And even though I still don’t agree with being so public about your negative perceptions of fellow players and teams, one thing is for sure: Ramsey’s GQ interview is certainly worth a read.
