Chiefs Named Potential Fit For Former All-Pro Cornerback

The Kansas City Chiefs will probably end up losing cornerback L’Jarius Sneed this offseason. Rumor has it that the Chiefs will slap a franchise tag on Sneed and then trade him.

Given the fact that Kansas City is likely going to spend big money to retain defensive lineman Chris Jones and will need to preserve come cash to fill other holes on the roster, Sneed’s seemingly inevitable departure is not at all surprising.

But, if and when the Chiefs and Sneed do part ways, the team will still need to figure out what it can do to replace him.

Matt Okada of NFL media sees a potentially interesting veteran target for Kansas City in free agency: Dallas Cowboys cornerback Stephon Gilmore.

There was a time when Gilmore was one of the best corners in football, if not the best. While those days are long behind him, he remains a productive defensive back and could absolutely help a contending team like the Chiefs in 2024.

After all, Gilmore was solid this past season, playing in all 17 games for the Cowboys and registering 68 tackles, a couple of interceptions, a forced fumble and 13 passes defended.

The 33-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of South Carolina, was originally selected by the Buffalo Bills with the 10th overall pick of the 2012 NFL Draft.

He spent the first five years of his career with the Bills, making his first Pro Bowl during his final season with the club. He then moved on to the New England Patriots, where he would earn three Pro Bowl nods and a pair of First-Team All-Pro selections in four years.

Since then, Gilmore has played for the Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts and, most recently, Dallas.

Kansas City may be able to nab Gilmore on an affordable one-year deal, providing him with the opportunity to win another Super Bowl (he won one with the Patriots) in the twilight of his career.
