Minnesota Vikings: 5 Training Camp Underdogs to Watch

Jim Cowsert-USA TODAY Sports

Jake Wieneke

Wieneke is another Minnesota born wide receiver prospect with promise that might land on an NFL roster this season. Wieneke possesses excellent size for his position at 6 foot 4 inches tall and 221 pounds and had very impressive production at South Dakota State earning All-American first team honors. Like Zylstra, Wieneke’s downfall is his lack of speed clocking a 4.6x 40-yard dash.

Wieneke is two inches taller and about five pounds heavier than Zylstra but shows similar athletic ability. Wieneke could be an effective red zone target and play the “big slot” role that may become more popular. Essentially at Wieneke’s size and speed, he’d be playing the role more akin to a pass-catching tight end than a wide receiver or a hybrid of the two. Wieneke also tracks the ball well and uses his body effectively. Most wide receivers nearing his size in the NFL are significantly faster and more athletic, so it remains to be seen if he does in the NFL what he did in college.
