Tyrod Taylor Solidifying His Spot
During the 2020 NFL Draft, the Los Angeles Chargers used the No. 6 pick to draft Justin Herbert. It may be a while before the team gives him snaps in game action considering the current plan is for Tyrod Taylor to start in at quarterback for Week 1.
It was always a possibility that Herbert was going to be eased into the starting role with the Chargers. For Taylor, he will have a prime opportunity to be able to show the rest of the NFL what he’s capable of achieving after spending time as a backup.
When discussing the quarterback position, Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn made it sound as if Herbert has not yet shown he’s able to ‘run this team’ based on his performance in training camp.
“Tyrod Taylor is our starter right now,” Lynn said, via Alden Gonzalez of ESPN. “Until someone steps up and shows that they can run this team, that’s [how] we’re going into it.”
The strange circumstances of the NFL offseason have made it more difficult than usual for rookies to be able to solidify their standing on depth charts. For a position as complicated as quarterback, it’s understandable that Herbert is not yet ready.
The expected long-term outcome is clearly for Herbert to eventually take the reins at the No. 1 quarterback spot. However, that doesn’t mean Taylor can’t use the opportunity in the meantime to solidify himself as a legitimate starter in the NFL.
