Clyde Edwards-Helaire is Thriving Early
It’s no secret the Kansas City Chiefs possess one of the most prolific offenses the NFL has ever seen. That’s why it was fascinating to see the team use the No. 32 selection in the 2020 NFL Draft to add Clyde Edwards-Helaire, a running back from one of the NCAA’s most explosive offenses ever.
With the decision by Damien Williams to opt-out of the 2020 season due to Covid-19 concerns, the pathway for Edwards-Helaire to play a significant role was cleared significantly. The Cheifs trust the LSU product to make a big impact and he’s proving why in training camp.
When discussing the early impression that Edwards-Helaire has made in training camp, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid pointed out he has all the tools to be successful in the NFL.
“He’s a real smart kid, so he’s picking it up,” Reid said, via Adam Teicher of ESPN. “He wants to be good, so that’s a good combination to have, and he has the talent to go with it. He’s strong. He’s short, but he’s strong. So he gets himself in good position with his quickness and his leverage and does a good job of protection. He has a pretty good base of what’s going on with it — who’s coming, who the offensive line has and his responsibility. Reps will continue to help that.”
Teams already have to account for game-wrecking talents like Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill when facing the Chiefs’ offense. When factoring in Sammie Watkins and Mecole Hardman are impactful receivers along with now Edwards-Helaire…watch out Kansas City again in 2020.
Many experts consider Edwards-Helaire as being one of the main contenders for the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year Award. He will have the opportunity to be able to solidify himself in such a way and certainly has the talent to get it done.
