Cam Newton is Looking Ready
Shortly after long-time starter Tom Brady decided to depart from the New England Patriots, the expectation shifted to Jarrett Stidham being the team’s No. 1 quarterback. A lot of time went by until there was even a hint of that potentially changing.
Fast forward to now, Stidham has dealt with a leg injury and does not have much momentum going his way. Meanwhile, Cam Newton appears to be thriving and trending in the right direction for the Patriots from both a health standpoint and in regard to impact.
According to Phil Perry of NBC Sports Boston, Newton is looking healthy and has been frequently getting snaps in 11-on-11 periods. This bodes well for his standing at quarterback ahead of the season.
“Healthy. Looks that way, at least. What I’d be interested to see is if the Patriots take advantage of what look like fresh legs more often than we’ve seen in training camp practices…
“I’d expect the team to incorporate more quarterback runs (and fake quarterback runs) into the plan. That threat of the run is what has made Newton who he is.”
The main question when it comes to Newton ahead of the 2020 season is how involved will he be as a running threat? He’s healthy now, but the Patriots will need to determine if they want to put him at risk of injury when game-planning on offense.
It will also be fascinating to see how improved Newton can be as a passer with the Patriots. Playing in a different offensive scheme could translate to greater results and if that does occur, the 2015 MVP could be in store for what could be considered as a career-renaissance in New England.
