NFL Exec Throws Shade At Bears’ Justin Fields After Week 7

Justin Fields, Bears

The Chicago Bears put together a rather impressive win on Sunday afternoon without starting quarterback Justin Fields, thumping the previously hot Las Vegas Raiders by a score of 30-12 under the direction of rookie quarterback Tyson Bagent.

Of course, Fields missed the contest due to a thumb injury he suffered during the Bears’ loss to the Minnesota Vikings last week, but a former NFL executive does not think that will hurt Chicago in the long run.

Speaking with the NFL Analysis Network following the Bears’ win, the former executive did not exactly sing Fields’ praises.

“Justin Fields has been a huge part of the problem for the Bears. He’s not a quarterback,” the former exec said. “I think Chicago would be in better hands with Tyson Bagent starting, although he’s not the answer either.”

Bagent went 21-for-29 with 162 yards and a touchdown while also carrying the football three times for 24 yards in the Bears’ Week 7 win. Last week, in relief of Fields, Bagent went 10-for-14 with 83 yards, an interception and a rushing score.

The 23-year-old is an undrafted rookie out of little-known Shepherd University, so I don’t think anyone is thinking of Bagent as a long-term solution in the Windy City.

As for Fields, the third-year pro actually put together a couple of impressive performances in Weeks 4 and 5, totaling eight touchdowns and one interception in those two games.

However, Fields has been mostly subpar since being drafted by the Bears in 2021, going 6-25 as a starter. Prior to his two strong outings this season, there was talk of Chicago benching Fields.

Fields still has another year remaining on his rookie deal, so it remains to be seen what the Bears decide to do with the 24-year-old going into 2024.

Chicago will head on the road to take on the Los Angeles Chargers next Sunday.
