New York Giants
Daniel Jones was not exactly a welcomed addition when the Giants made him the sixth pick in the 2019 draft. He began the season as the backup to Eli Manning but that did not last long. Jones made his first start in Week 3 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He finished 23-36 for 336 yards and two touchdowns. He added two touchdowns on the ground.
Over the course of the season, Jones showed inconsistency that is not uncommon from a rookie. He totaled two games with three interceptions, they came against the New England Patriots and Green Bay Packers. Jones also had some big performances. He finished with 322 yards and four touchdowns against the Detroit Lions and 308 yards with four more scores against the New York Jets. Jones’ best performance came in an overtime win against Washington where he threw for 352 yards and five touchdowns. He did not throw an interception in those three games.
Jones’ biggest problem during his rookie season was obvious — fumbling. He was sacked 38 times last season and led the league with 18 total fumbles. This was an issue during his time at Duke and it showed up during the preseason. This is a problem that can be fixed with better pocket awareness and a better offensive line.
As a rookie, Jones definitely showed more than what was expected of him. The 2020 season will be important in seeing what Jones really is. ESPN projects Jones to finish with 3,732 yards with 25 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. He will have Sterling Shepard and Golden Tate on the outside along with Darius Slayton.
