Baker Mayfield

Just like Allen this offseason, Mayfield saw plenty of hype before the 2019 season after the Cleveland Browns landed Odell Beckham Jr. via trade. Despite the expectations, Mayfield and the Browns fell flat on their face on the offensive side of the ball. After a strong showing in his rookie campaign, Mayfield saw his completion percentage, touchdown, and interception numbers worsen in 2019.

In Mayfield’s defense, his offensive line didn’t give him much help. The former Heisman Trophy winner had just 2.3 seconds in the pocket per drop back (tied for lowest in the NFL) and was hurried 65 times (third-most in the NFL). Altogether, he was pressured a total of 129 times last season, which was the 12th most in the NFL. A plus for Mayfield was that he completed 40.8 percent of his passes under pressure (seventh-best mark in the NFL).

In light of that, the Browns addressed the offensive line this offseason. After signing Jack Conklin in free agency, Cleveland used the No. 10 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft on Jedrick Wills. Also, the Browns added Austin Hooper in free agency. Above all, the hiring of Kevin Stefanski as the team’s next head coach could be beneficial for Mayfield.

Lastly, both Beckham and Jarvis Landry dealt with nagging injuries in 2019. While Landry’s status for Week 1 is unknown, both he and Beckham are poised to show that they can be the best wide receiver duo in the NFL. In the event that everything falls into place perfectly for the Browns, then Mayfield has the talent to win an NFL MVP at some point in his career.
