Christian McCaffrey, the star running back of the San Francisco 49ers, has had a whale of a year. In the regular season, he ran for 1,459 yards, which led the NFL, and 14 touchdowns, while also adding 564 yards and seven more touchdowns in the air. As a result, he also led the league in total yards and touchdowns from scrimmage.

In the 49ers’ win over the Green Bay Packers in the divisional round of the playoffs, he tallied 98 rushing yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winning score with just over a minute remaining.

This week, McCaffrey was rewarded for his monster year when the Pro Football Writers of America named him their Offensive Player of the Year. The group also named the Cleveland Browns’ Myles Garrett its Defensive Player of the Year and Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson its MVP.

McCaffrey was also named by the NFL to his third Pro Bowl while earning his second All-Pro First Team nod.

Since being traded to San Francisco midway through last season, he has greatly raised the team’s ceiling while transforming its offense. This season, it ranked third in scoring, second in total yards and tops in rushing touchdowns.

He is one of the few running backs in the league who can not only catch screen passes but also run legitimate routes and even line up as a makeshift wide receiver. It almost seems like he has been tailor-made for head coach Kyle Shanahan’s offense and philosophy of positionless football.

On Sunday, the Niners will host the Detroit Lions in the NFC Championship Game with a trip to Super Bowl LVIII on the line. Detroit was second in rushing yards allowed and third in yards per rush attempt given up during the regular season, making this contest a good test for McCaffrey and his impressive skills.

The Associated Press will name the NFL’s official Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, as well as its official MVP winner, within the next couple of weeks.
