NFL: One glaring weakness for each team in the NFC West entering 2020

San Francisco 49ers — Secondary

Given that the 49ers are the reigning NFC champions, they don’t have many weaknesses on their roster. However, if you were to pinpoint one aspect of their roster that could improve is in the secondary.

Aside from Richard Sherman — who played at an All-Pro level in 2019 — and K’Waun Williams, San Francisco don’t have much reliability on the backend of the defense.

Of course, the 49ers boast one of the best pass-rushing units in the NFL, led by Nick Bosa, Arik Armstead, and Dee Ford. Meanwhile, rookie Javon Kinlaw is expected to be an immediate contributor to San Francisco’s daunting defense. While the team’s pass rush goes hand-in-hand with the secondary, the play of the secondary could be more consistent in 2020.

Again, it’s not as if the 49ers have a terrible group of defensive backs. Especially with San Francisco finishing with the No. 1 pass defense last season. If there is an area of Kyle Shanahan’s current team — maybe besides the interior offensive line — that could prevent the 49ers from defending their NFC West title, it’s the secondary.
