After two decades of being the envy of the entire NFL, the New England Patriots are dealing with some real turmoil.
They fell to a 1-4 record after they were shellacked 34-0 by the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, and it came one week after they were demolished 38-3 by the Dallas Cowboys. Although quarterback Mac Jones is struggling and lacks lots of support on offense, many are pointing their fingers at, of all people, head coach Bill Belichick.
For years, Belichick, the mastermind behind the Patriots’ Way, looked untouchable, but now his luster is wearing off, and some have even suggested that his job could be in jeopardy.
Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Chargers have the personnel to be a very good team and possibly even a dark-horse Super Bowl contender. But they’re just 2-2 this year, and many fans have wanted head coach Brandon Staley fired for a while.
NFL NEWS & RUMORS: Bill Belichick, New England Patriots & Los Angeles Chargers Updates
Former NFL player and Super Bowl champion James Jones says Belichick should leave the Patriots after this season and take over the helm of the Chargers.
Part of Jones’ argument is that Belichick’s time in New England is over, as Jones simply isn’t a quality QB. But the other part of Jones’ argument is that unless Belichick wins a Super Bowl without Tom Brady, he won’t be able to prove that he’s a truly great coach.
NFL NEWS & RUMORS: Bill Belichick, New England Patriots & Los Angeles Chargers Updates
Los Angeles has 25-year-old star QB Justin Herbert, who is 6-foot-6 and has a bionic rocket launcher for a throwing arm. It also has capable playmakers in wide receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams (although Williams is out for the year with a knee injury) and dual-threat running back Austin Ekeler. On defense, the teams has some holes, but Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack are very good pass rushers, while safety Derwin James has made the Pro Bowl in three of his previous five seasons.
Perhaps a coach such as Belichick, along with some long-overdue good health, could get the Chargers their first-ever world championship.
