Eagles’ Carson Wentz Tops Browns’ Baker Mayfield Across the Board

Based on their production up to this point, Carson Wentz should easily outpace Baker Mayfield in 2020. The Oklahoma product is fighting to keep his head above water while Wentz is already safe on a four-year, $128 extension. In a worst-case scenario, Mayfield could find himself on the bench at some point during the season.

On paper, the Browns have one of the most talented offenses in the NFL. The franchise fixed its offensive line this offseason by drafting Jedrick Wills Jr. and signing Jack Conklin. The team also signed tight end Austin Hooper and drafted Harrison Bryant. If Mayfield can’t win at least seven games with this unit, his NFL future could be in jeopardy.

Meanwhile, Wentz led the beaten and bruised Eagles to the playoffs last year. The fourth-year pro threw for 4,039 yards, 27 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. Philadelphia went 9-7 and won the NFC East. What Wentz accomplished with his injury-riddled offense was incredible.

Philadelphia’s top three leaders in receiving yards last year were tight ends Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert and running back Miles Sanders. The team’s leading wide receiver was Alshon Jeffery, who played ten games and finished the year with 490 yards. At one point, Greg Ward, a college quarterback turned receiver, was a top player on Philly’s depth chart.

However, Wentz received plenty of reinforcements this offseason. The Eagles drafted three receivers, traded for Marquise Goodwin, and signed DeSean Jackson. That’s a lot of speed injected into an offense that desperately needed some deep threats.

Based on Wentz’s superb performance with a subpar supporting cast last season compared to Mayfield’s subpar performance with a superb supporting cast, Philadelphia’s quarterback is in line for a better 2020 season. He’s already a top-ten quarterback in the league and should reach new heights this year. Meanwhile, Mayfield needs to get his career back on track.
