1. Rodgers’ Window Is Closing
Luckily, the Packers have Rodgers under center. It is unknown at this point if they appreciate that fact anymore. The team certainly did not show it by drafting Love in the first round of the draft. Players have windows for their careers and teams have windows for championships. In Green Bay, they both might be closing.
It is not as much closing as the franchise manually closing the window on Rodgers. The 36-year-old is under contract for four more years with the Packers. There is a potential out after the 2021 season. Matt LaFleur was brought in as the new head coach prior to the 2019 season and it seems like he wants to make it clear who runs the show. At the end of the day, it is still about winning.
The Packers won the Super Bowl back in 2010. Since then, they have been back to the playoffs seven times and are 0-3 in NFC Championship Games. If the Packers do intend to go away from Rodgers in the upcoming years, it would be smart to get him another receiver and try to win while he is there. It is unlikely that Love will step in and have the same impact on a game or season that Rodgers has.
The decision is confusing. Drafting Love in the first round is still something that is hard to justify. Either way, the Packers have to have a plan moving forward. The plan for the 2020 season should be to win a Super Bowl and trading for Green would certainly help.
