The Quarterback Situation
Having two capable quarterbacks is a great problem to have. The Eagles winning a Super Bowl last year with their backup QB, Nick Foles, is proof-positive of that.
By no means should Carson Wentz, who is recovering from a torn ACL and MCL, be worried about losing his job, however. The future of the Eagles lies on his right arm. This is still his team. But for now, he must wait to have clearance to once again take the reins.
For the interim, however, the team is in Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles’ hands — and that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. After all, he did win Philly their first ring and until Wentz is cleared to return, Foles should have no problem carrying the weight, despite struggling in the preseason.
As far as when Wentz shall return, is anyone’s guess — but coach Pederson says that it isn’t up to him.
“This decision is going to be with our doctors, team trainer, [general manager] Howie Roseman, even dialogue with Carson Wentz,” Pederson said. “When he’s cleared, he’s cleared. We’ll see what happens in a couple weeks.”
However long “a couple weeks” turns into, its Foles’ offense. Having a Super Bowl MVP backup QB isn’t a luxury that comes around quite often. It’s unheard of, really. But Foles should certainly pick up where he left off.
He was 2-1 in his regular season appearances in 2017. He threw five touchdowns to only two interceptions, according to Pro Football Reference.
Most teams would be in disarray if their franchise QB was still recovering from a late-season ACL tear. But not the Eagles. Not the reigning Super Bowl champs.
Their QB situation is unlike any other in the NFL — and it’s definitely one reason that’ll contribute to repeating in 2018.
