Young Talent in the Front Seven
As previously mentioned, a ton of draft stock has been invested into the front seven of this defense. Four first round picks are on either the linebacking corps or the defensive line for this team. The talent is there, and once it comes together, weak offensive lines will be terrorized and strong units will be tested. Rushing the passer is paramount in building a defense, and the Thomas-Buckner duo could wreak havoc. When it comes to stopping the run, I fully expect the 49ers to rank in the top quarter of the league. None of this happens without the young talent on this defense, especially within the front seven.
Possibly the largest factor in this defense’s success is Reuben Foster. He’s seen controversy before, but he has all the talent one can ask for. A top five prospect in his draft class, Foster has already emerged as an elite off-ball linebacker. This only adds to the monsters they have up front. Eli Harold, Fred Warner, and Kentavious Street all should see a good amount of snaps as well, and will most likely exceed their respective draft slots.
Why This Helps Them Contend
An efficient pass rush, or lack thereof, is one thing that held the ‘Niners back in recent years. If it returns to form, the defense becomes a more complete unit. It becomes a group that could play deep into January. The run-stuffing defensive line play will stay a constant. Making the quarterback uncomfortable is so important and nearly every winning team does it well. If this team wants to take that next step, the front seven will have to perform.
