Help Replace Departed WRs
With the salary cap situation the 49ers faced this offseason, it was inevitable they would experience some key departures. They ended up trading away Marquise Goodwin during the NFL Draft and earlier had Emmanuel Sanders depart to the New Orleans Saints in free agency.
There was a clear need for the 49ers to add more talent at the receiver position given those departures. As it currently stands, Deebo Samuel and Kendrick Bourne are the main two options that set the tone for the depth chart aside from Brandon Aiyuk.
By drafting Aiyuk, the 49ers will now have a versatile receiver that can step in from day one and make an impact in a variety of different roles. With Kyle Shanahan thinking Aiyuk can be Isaac Bruce, there’s plenty of reason to believe the Arizona State product will be utilized right away.
Having the option of moving Aiyuk around in different spots is the best way to replace Goodwin and Sanders. It’s worth noting, there are other receiving threats that can step up to help fill those voids, but if they come up short, Aiyuk could be relied upon to overcompensate.
