Philadelphia Eagles
There were plenty of areas the Philadelphia Eagles needed to bolster on its defense heading into the offseason. Their acquisitions were headlined by Darius Slay at corner and Javon Hargrave on the defensive line but they still face a few needs, including the linebacker spot.
The Eagles used the NFL Draft to add a few linebacker prospects to its roster in addition to signing Jatavis Brown in free agency. For reference, they selected Davion Taylor in the third round and Shaun Bradley in the sixth round.
What the Eagles have done to address the linebacker position likely won’t be enough for a team looking to compete at a high-level. That’s why signing a veteran linebacker like Clay Matthews makes plenty of sense, especially when considering the compensation likely wouldn’t be significant.
The greatest use for Matthews from the Eagles’ perspective would be as an outside linebacker to help bolster their pass rush in addition to his leadership impact for the team’s new prospects.
