49ers: 3 breakout candidates for San Francisco in 2020

Jason Verrett, Cornerback

Finally, the addition of veteran cornerback Jason Verrett might surprise some fans. Verrett was signed last offseason, but once again saw his year end early due to injury. While the 49ers were expected to move on from Verrett, they chose to give him another year.

The move to re-sign Verrett will pay off big time for San Francisco. Back in 2015, the last season that Verrett was able to play for a full year, he racked up 47 tackles, three interceptions, a defensive touchdown, and 12 defended passes. He may not get back to that level of play, but he will solidify himself as the No. 2 corner in San Francisco.

Verrett will be a big plus across from Richard Sherman for the 49ers’ defense. He may not be a star again, but he absolutely has the talent to be a difference maker.

Last season, the 49ers desperately needed a legitimate No. 2 corner. They are going to have just that in Verrett this season.
