3 reasons Baker Mayfield will have a bounce-back year in 2020

2. Kevin Stefanski will play to Baker’s strengths

One of the fundamental flaws with last year’s Browns team was the disconnect between quarterback and offensive coordinator/head coach.

Freddie Kitchens’ offense just doesn’t suit Baker’s skill set well at all. Kitchens wants to consistently stretch the field, and in order to do that efficiently, a strong armed quarterback is usually preferred. Baker is not that type of quarterback — far from it.

Stefanski’s offense is a variant of the Shanahan offense that’s been a staple in the NFL for years. It’s a run-first scheme that relies heavily on setting up the play action game. Standing at just 6-foot, Mayfield is at his best when he’s outside of the pocket and doesn’t have to try to see over his lineman in front of him.

It’s no coincidence that Kirk Cousins saw a career year quarterbacking this offense last season. It’s a QB friendly system that’ll focus on utilizing what Baker is good at — making pinpoint passes while outside of the pocket.
