Cowboys: Why not pulling off a Jamal Adams was best for Dallas

Future Contract Cost

While Jamal Adams still is under contract through 2021, he is going to seek top dollar on his next deal. It is debatable whether that’s worth it for his position but there’s more to the situation to consider beyond just that aspect of it.

For starters, the league-wide salary cap will be impacted by significantly reduced capacity at games this season. The future implications are unknown at this moment, but making significant commitments without knowing it could become problematic.

Soon they will need to pay big money to Dak Prescott and that alone will impact their salary cap table significantly for years to come. Having to pay him along with Adams and the other substantial deals would have been tough.

Having team friendly deals after Prescott gets his new contract will be crucial for the Cowboys. Parting with two first-round picks would have made it much more difficult to have contributing talents on fair deals.
