David Montgomery, Chicago Bears
Very quietly, on what was a generally hard to watch Bears offense, David Montgomery was a decent player– and a high-volume guy as well. In 2020, with more experience and (probably) a new starting quarterback, Montgomery might be due for an uptick in volume and efficiency.
Montgomery was typically forced to share the starting job with his Chicago running mate Tarik Cohen, along with a large portion of the carries. But Cohen was rarely ever relied upon as much as Montgomery, who’s more of an “all-around” type player than Cohen anyway.
Cohen shouldn’t be seen as a big threat to Montgomery’s role in the offense. Especially in what will be Montgomery’s second year, with more experience under his belt, he’ll continue to be the guy that regularly saw 15-20 carries a game.
But the biggest boost to Montgomery’s stock comes from their offseason acquisition of Nick Foles. Foles isn’t the best quarterback in the league by any stretch, but he poses more of a threat to throw the ball than Mitch Trubisky ever has and ever will. Having an experienced quarterback like Foles taking snaps should take some attention away from Montgomery and the running game, leaving the Bears’ running back room to work.
Montgomery is a risk, but depending on your fantasy league, he might be one that’s worth taking.
