Fantasy Football: Start ‘Em, Sit ‘Em Recommendations for Week 3

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

QBs to Start in Week 3

49ers’ Jimmy Garoppolo (vs. Chiefs): Jimmy Garoppolo had a decent bounce-back week in Week 2. In Week 1, he struggled against a strong Minnesota Vikings defense, scoring just nine fantasy points. In Week 2, he scored 16.6 points, throwing for two touchdowns in a victory. I like Garoppolo to build on his Week 2 performance against a Kansas City Chiefs defense allowing the most points to QBs this year.

Vikings’ Kirk Cousins (vs. Bills): Kirk Cousins had a great performance in Week 2. Cousins is currently the third highest scoring QB in fantasy. This is in large part due to having Stefon Diggs, Adam Thielen and Dalvin Cook as receiving weapons. This week he faces a weak Buffalo Bills defense that is allowing the fourth most points to opposing QBs.

He should continue his success this year.

Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes (vs. 49ers): There’s no question that Patrick Mahomes is a must start guy in fantasy right now. Through two weeks, he’s the second highest scoring QB in fantasy. In a high-powered offense like the Chiefs, he should be able to continue racking up huge digits.

This week he squares off against the San Francisco 49ers, where it could become a shootout in this game. The 49ers allow the seventh most points to QBs so far this season.

Under-the-Radar QBs

Buccaneers’ Ryan Fitzpatrick (vs. Steelers): I know he isn’t technically under the radar at this point, but Ryan Fitzpatrick should be considered to start this week. Fitzpatrick sits atop the fantasy scoring leaders for QBs. He has another favorable matchup this week against the Steelers, who look like a mess right now. Let’s be honest, we all want more post-game press conferences from Fitzpatrick.

Rams’ Jared Goff (vs. Chargers): Jared Goff seems like he will be an under-the-radar guy the majority of the season. No one talks about Goff as one of the up-and-coming QBs like other guys in the NFL, even though he should be. He plays in a very high-powered Rams offense that can put up points in a hurry. Goff faces the Los Angeles Chargers, who allow the ninth most points to QBs this year.

QBs to Sit in Week 3

Broncos’ Case Keenum (vs. Ravens): Case Keenum has had a solid start with his new team. With Emmanuel Sanders and Demaryius Thomas at wide receiver, this offense is dangerous through the air. Keenum will face a tough Baltimore Ravens defense this week, who allows the ninth least amount of points to QBs so far.

Chargers’ Philip Rivers (vs. Rams): Philip Rivers is a good fantasy QB, but I would temper expectations with him this week against the Rams. Rivers currently sits as the fourth highest scoring QB in fantasy. The Rams defense has yet to allow a touchdown through the air, even though Rivers is the best QB they’ll face through Week 3.

I’d avoid Rivers if possible this week, against a stingy Rams defense.
