What has already been a disastrous 2023 season took another turn for the worse for the New York Giants in Week 8. The team figured out a new way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, watching Graham Gano miss a 35-yard field goal, giving the New York Jets just enough time to get down the field and kick a field goal of their own to force overtime.

It was Gano’s second miss of the game, as he missed a 47-yard kick in the first half. He took responsibility for the loss and refused to blame the left knee injury he is playing through as a reason for the misses. Had he made that 35-yard chip shot, the tenor of the Giants’ season this Monday morning would have been vastly different.

Gano is far from the only Giants’ player dealing with an injury. Starting quarterback Daniel Jones has been dealing with a neck injury suffered in Week 5 against the Miami Dolphins when he was sacked by Andrew Van Ginkel. He has been a limited participant in practice as he hadn’t been cleared yet by doctors.

Luckily for the Giants, he has now received clearance and is in line to return to the lineup against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 9. The timing couldn’t be better for New York, as backup Tyrod Taylor was forced out of Sunday’s game with an injury to his ribs.

That injury to Taylor pushed undrafted free agent Tommy DeVito into the lineup and the results were as disastrous as you’d expect. The Giants finished the game with -9 total passing yards, setting an NFL record in the process.

Despite DeVito not completing a pass until overtime, the Giants were still in a position to win thanks to an incredible effort from their defense. Taylor remains in the hospital as he is getting his ribs injured checked out.

At 2-6, the Giants season could already be a lost one. These next few weeks will be imperative for Jones to showcase something as he has played at a very poor level thus far this season. Seeing Taylor, a journeyman who has been a backup for a majority of his career, operate the offense better than Jones, certainly wasn’t an encouraging thing for the franchise.
