How the Los Angeles Rams’ offense must improve in 2020

Must Improve in Run Blocking

During their recent Super Bowl run, the Los Angeles Rams’ offense was built focused on the ground-game. Last season, Todd Gurley averaged below four-yards a carry and that’s problematic. However, this often wasn’t because of Gurley’s inability to find holes. Rather, there was frequently a lack of favorable running lanes altogether.

While Gurley is hoping for a resurgence with the Atlanta Falcons, the Rams’ offensive line must improve in order for the talent in their backfield to be successful. That can partly be done through fielding a more respectable passing attack so defenses elect not to stack the box. A critical element to those efforts will be an improvement in pass blocking.

A key source for optimism in regards to the Rams’ running attack is the selection of former Florida State standout Cam Akers in the 2020 NFL Draft. The offensive line he played with last season was awful but he transcended that. Although the adjustment to the NFL is difficult, running backs tend to adjust better than other positions.
