The departure of Melvin Gordon to the Denver Broncos in free agency, there is real potential for the Los Angeles Chargers to benefit from signing a running back like Devonta Freeman. They used the 2020 NFL Draft to pick Joshua Kelley but that’s not an answer for the immediate future.

The Chargers thrive when using two-backs and as of right now, Austin Ekeler provides a strong pass-catching presence out of the backfield. There is a need for Los Angeles to add an established run-oriented back into the group for at least 2020 would help.

It’s important there is as much investment as possible into the running game to help Tyrod Taylor succeed. He’s simply too conservative of a passer to make that the centerpiece of an offense, so the running game is pivotal.
