Panthers: Is Teddy Bridgewater the Right Fit?
The Cam Newton-era is officially over for the Carolina Panthers and their new starting quarterback is Teddy Bridgewater. He was signed to a three-year, $63 million deal after spending time as Drew Brees’ backup with the New Orleans Saints.
There is a legitimate cause to question Bridgewater’s ability to succeed as a starting quarterback throughout the course of a full season. Yes, he went 5-0 in five starts last season, but there’s more to consider than just simply going off the win-loss record from those performances.
Only one win came against a playoff team (Seattle Seahawks) and even performance featured 14 points being scored combined from special teams and defense. Not to discredit Bridgewater, it just wasn’t the case that he was carrying the Saints in those games.
Now playing under Joe Brady, it’s important for Bridgewater to display an ability to make more dynamic throws. The Panthers seem to believe he just wasn’t asked to do this much in New Orleans but has the arm strength and necessary receivers to succeed. Will that transpire on the field?
