Carolina Panthers – Cornerback
In speaking of bad defenses in the NFC South, the Carolina Panthers gave up the second-most most points in the NFL last season in addition to allowing the 10th most yards. There were plenty of weaknesses they faced, but perhaps none more crippling than their secondary.
During the offseason, the Panthers cut safety Eric Reid and drafted Jeremy Chinn and while that’s solid, the cornerback position is a different story. The Panthers lost starting cornerback James Bradberry to the New York Giants.
Carolina will now look for Donte Jackson to take over for Bradberry as the team’s projected No. 1 corner. He has intriguing flashes over the last two seasons but has largely been considered as inconsistent. Additionally, the Panthers signed cornerback Eli Apple last in the offseason to be the other starting cornerback opposite of Jackson.
Apple is a downgrade for the Panthers at the cornerback position and will hurt them. With the moves Carolina made in the offseason, they did very little to improve their cornerback position for 2020 other than what you might call patchwork.
