Cleveland Browns – QB Play
When was the last time Cleveland had a franchise quarterback? Brian Snipe set a couple of franchise records and won an MVP in the late 1970s and early 80s. Then, Bernie Kosar took over and carried Cleveland through the early 90s. Since Kosar left, Cleveland only has two winning seasons.
Derek Anderson authored one of those remarkable years in 2007, but the Browns missed the playoffs. While Anderson made the Pro Bowl in 2007, he went 6-10 in his final starts with the Browns. Since then, Cleveland has always finished in the bottom half of the AFC North’s standings.
Some fans thought Cleveland finally found another franchise quarterback when Baker Mayfield set the rookie record with 27 passing touchdowns. After he put together a borderline Pro Bowl performance, Browns fans expected big things from Mayfield.
Unfortunately, the former Heisman Trophy winner flopped in 2019. Despite the addition of Odell Beckham and the emergence of Nick Chubb, Cleveland went 6-10. Mayfield threw 22 touchdowns and 21 interceptions while completing only 59.4% of his pass attempts.
If Mayfield doesn’t turn things around in 2020, the Browns might start looking ahead for another quarterback. Two other AFC North teams already possess high-caliber quarterbacks on rookie deals.
