NFL: One second-year player to watch from each team in the NFC North

Detroit Lions — T.J. Hockenson

Contrary to what some believe, the Lions have actually done a remarkable job surrounding Stafford with talented players in the offense. During the 2019 NFL Draft, Detroit would select T.J. Hockenson with the No. 8 pick in the first round, giving Stafford a receiving threat at the tight end position.

In his first career start in Week 1, Hockenson would excel versus the Arizona Cardinals, catching six passes for 131 yards and a touchdown. Despite his stellar performance in Week 1, the Iowa product would combine for only 26 receptions, 236 yards, and one touchdown in the final 11 games of his rookie season.

An ankle injury coupled with an inconsistent role in Detroit’s offense caused Hockenson to have an underwhelming rookie campaign in 2019. However, with Stafford returning and another offseason to get acclimated in the offense, Hockenson should have a more prominent role with the Lions next season.
