2. New England Patriots
Notable members of the secondary: Stephon Gilmore, Jason McCourty, J.C. Jackson, Devin McCourty, Patrick Chung, Kyle Dugger
Despite the noticeable struggles of the offense a season ago, the New England Patriots fielded a daunting defense. The Patriots finished with the No. 1 defense in yards allowed per game (275.9) and the No. 1 defense in points allowed per game (14.1) in 2019. That was in large part due to New England’s playmaking secondary.
Of course, the Patriots employ the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year in Stephon Gilmore. But besides Gilmore, New England has a depth chart that notably includes the likes of Jason McCourty, J.C. Jackson, Devin McCourty, Patrick Chung, and rookie Kyle Dugger. Both Gilmore and Jackson were among the top four cornerbacks in passer rating allowed when targeted last season, per PFF.
After finishing as the second-best team in passing yards allowed and takeaways in 2019, the Patriots still have one of the best secondaries in the league. If New England’s offense can show some signs of life with either Cam Newton or Jarrett Stidham, the Patriots could sit atop the AFC East once again in 2020.
