3. Cam Akers turns in big rookie season
Todd Gurley is in Atlanta. This left the Rams with Darrell Henderson and in need of a running back in the draft. They opted to go with Cam Akers with the 52nd overall pick in the 2020 draft. The Florida State product will enter camp with a chance to win the starting job.
The fact that the Rams took a running back in the second round hints that he is going to get a bulk of the carries. Despite the dysfunction of Florida State football, Akers found success. He finished with 1,144 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns as a junior. He averaged 7.5 yards per carry and excelled in the passing game as well.
Akers is a player that will fit well into what McVay wants to do. At 5-foot-10 and 216 pounds, Akers can use his speed and receiving ability to be extremely versatile. This gives the Rams another weapon to use and one that could contribute right from Week 1.
Do not be surprised to see Akers run for 1,000 yards in year one. He is a talented runner that knows how to find a hole in the offensive line and hit it. He might not be used as their goal line back, but he has big play ability and can bust a few long runs for touchdowns.
